Review: The Death of Bunny Munro by Nick Cave |
|

Put Cormac McCarthy, Franz Kafka and Benny Hill together in a Brighton seaside guesthouse and they might just come up with The Death of Bunny Munro.
Irvine Welsh
With that, Mr. Welsh may have nailed it, yet I am still unsure.
All I had to go on before cracking the spine of this one, Nick Cave's forthcoming second novel, was that blurb coupled with firsthand knowledge of Cave's abilities as a storyteller. That is, I was rather clueless, unprepared even, for what lie in wait for me and my literary senses. No longer unprepared, I may still be clueless. Clueless, at least, in my abilities to describe and inform. I am, at this juncture, more apt to say, "You have to read this book!" than to proffer exegesis. To put it precisely, I simply don't know what I just read. Was it a parable? An existential odyssey? Mind you, this is all on me, has nothing to do with the written word. The narrative is clear and understandable, yes, but I have thus far failed to draw any concrete conclusions beyond abstraction.

Review: The Adderall Diaries by Stephen Elliott |
|
Jun 14, 2009 - 5:40 PM - by thirstygerbil

Enticed by the hook of a true crime story involving Hans Reiser’s marital crimes and eight unrelated murders, The Adderall Diaries author Stephen Elliott instead discovers a vehicle by which to organize and understand his own disjointed life. “Hans waits in his cell, thinking through his defense like a puzzle,” Elliott says late in the book, ”which once solved will set him free. I’m thinking through my own” (pg 145).

Review: Strange Places: A Memoir of Mental Illness by Will Elliott |
|
Jun 10, 2009 - 12:47 PM - by JesseLawrence

I've been places that no one else on this planet will ever go. Me, I've lived for a short time as a werewolf. As a vampire. As a revolutionary. As a psychic. As a magician. As someone who cannot be hurt by physical force. As someone who can speak to the dead...I have lived as Jesus Christ. I have been he who knows all. You see, all this is true, because, for a while, it was all real.
Will Elliott
You may have heard of Will Elliott. Most likely, you've heard of his debut novel, The Pilo Family Circus, which was published in Australia in 2006, then in the UK, and in 2009 in the States by Underland Press. If any of this is familiar, or you happen to know, you may have asked why this guy here is reviewing a book published solely in Australia. Well, that is true. Strange Places: A Memoir of mental Illness may not be published elsewhere, but after reading The Pilo Family Circus, after being taken on that journey, the book having swept the rug out from under my feet, I wanted to read more by this emerging author. The above passage, taken from the jacket, cinched it. How could I not read a book thusly described?

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS - New Surreal Anthology
My name is Danny, and I am putting together an anthology called "The Ultimate Surreal". I have been published in an anthology of horror before and I have a few contacts and ideas of how to market the book.
You can submit it to me at dangrn77@hotmail.com: put Surrealism Anthology in the subject posting. It can have a horror context or sci-fi or even fantasy as long as it operates on the same level of the surrealist's manifesto which is:

Review: Clown Girl by Monica Drake |
|
Jun 02, 2009 - 7:38 PM - by FergHova
|

Nita ties balloons into religious artifacts. She was orphaned at the age of seventeen, lost her first child with her beloved boyfriend while he was away trying to break into Clown College, and before the first chapter is over she's in the hospital. Nita, or Clown Girl as her enemies call her, or Sniffles as she would like to be known, is trying to make as much money as she possibly can so that she can find and move in with her boyfriend, Rex Galore. Toss in a whole lot more problems for Nita and you can't but help picture the famous "comedy" and "tragedy" masks linked together as this poor clown can't catch a break.
