Red Fez |

We at Red Fez are now accepting submissions for issue 21. We're looking for well-written stories and poems. That is the only requirement, quality. Genre doesn't matter, only quality. Submissions are open mostly year round, save the week or two it takes to put an issue together.
To note, Stephen Graham Jones' story, Deviants, was featured in issue 17. I was very excited to get that.
I am the fiction editor, as I've not so eloquently said in the past. I'm always trying to get Velvet authors in Fez for two reasons: I'm a Velvet loyalist through and through, and I want damn good stories, by some damn good authors for this journal. I know there are some to be found here.

Review: Man In the Dark by Paul Auster |

Man In the Dark by Paul Auster (Henry Holt & Company, 2008; 180 pages)
Imagination Goes to War in Paul Auster’s New Novel
The year is 2007, April, to be more specific, and the President of the United States is George W. Bush. Beyond those basics, little else seems familiar in the world described in the pages of Man In the Dark, the 12th novel from New Jersey-born author Paul Benjamin Auster.
In this alternate world, the 9/11 attacks on American soil did not occur. Instead, the contested outcome of the 2000 Presidential election resulted in 16 states seceding and an all out civil war. With 13 million dead already, the Independent States of America continue their bloody battle with the Federals.
Eggs cost five dollars each, as does a cup of tepid tea. The one-dollar bill and coins are no longer accepted.
Wait. Stop. The narrator of our story – for it is indeed just a story – needs to piss in a jar by the bed on which he lies.

Review: Commonwealth by Joey Goebel |

I can’t help but smile at the coincidence as I’m embroiled in hour number seven of what could very well be called “Biden Watch ’08!” Yes folks, he was named as Barack Obama’s running mate and ever since, every news agency in the universe has been sitting outside of Joe’s house waiting desperately for him to exit his $1.3 million dollar home to fly to Springfield, Illinois in order to accompany Barack at a rally this mid-afternoon. I think some of my favorite parts thus far were when “dramatic events” unfolded as secret service simply started moving vehicles around in the driveway. Or, the best part thus far was when we were informed that Mr. Obama had already been to the gym and was now at home where he was “probably showering.” There is a war going on, right?

The New Velvet Up And Running |

As you're no doubt aware, we have completed the transition into adding a frontpage. It's been a crazy couple of weeks, and we're not completely done, but save it to say this is what the Velvet is going to more or less look like from here on out.
There are a lot of things we would like to do with this site, a lot of dreamin', but it can't begin without a template. The technology we are using to integrate our pages with carries a lot of capabilities with it that, should we decide to add more functionality, we can much easier than with just the forum.
But, for now, we've got plenty of new site functions to play with, and a lot of work to do in increasing our membership.
